Women led e-bike taxi service

The Delhi government is planning to launch a women-driven e-bike taxi service specifically designed for women commuters. The proposed scheme, called E-Bike Didi Scheme, will operate at popular tourist spots across Delhi. The goal is to offer safe, affordable and eco-friendly short-distance travel where transportation options are often limited.

Under the plan, electric bikes can be deployed near sites like Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, Chandni Chowk and Humayun’s Tomb. These places attract huge crowds, and visitors often struggle to find quick rides for short distances. Therefore, this service can make the travel of tourists easier and more comfortable.

Opportunities for women riders

Moreover, this scheme can create new employment opportunities for women. Residents of Delhi aged 18 to 40 years can apply if they have a driving license, even a learner’s license. Selected applicants will receive training in driving electric bikes and assisting tourists.

“The scheme is likely to be based on the concept of private bike-taxi hailing service, but could be transformative as it will serve a dual purpose,” An officer said. He further explained that the scheme can improve the safety of women as well as open doors to employment in a sector usually dominated by men.

Cleaner transportation and better visitor experience

The government has chosen electric two-wheelers as they do not produce tailpipe emissions and produce less noise. As a result, they can help reduce crowding and pollution near public monuments. Officials believe the system could also reduce waiting times for visitors who currently rely on autos or walk long distances.

“An organized e-bike taxi network could reduce waiting times, reduce congestion and reduce emissions at the world’s popular sites,” The officer said.

Implementation and next steps

This project will be operated by Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation. Once the policy is approved, the agency will invite applications both online and offline. Initially, the service may start at a few locations and later be expanded depending on the demand and response of tourists.

“After the department-level consultation is over, a draft will be prepared and placed before the competent authority for consideration and approval.” No deadline has been set yet, the official said.
