KTM 390 SMC R spotted testing

ktm 390 smc r Shares its base structure and parts with 390 enduro r. However, the main difference comes from the wheel setup used. The bike rides on 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends instead of the bigger wheels of the Enduro. Therefore, this setup is suitable for supermoto riding, which mixes street racing with dirt sections. Apart from this, the suspension and frame parts remain mostly unchanged.

GST 2.0 creates pricing pressure

Despite the testing activity, the KTM 390 SMC R faces challenges for its launch in India. Under GST 2.0, motorcycles above 350 cc attract a 40 percent tax rate. Therefore, pricing becomes difficult for performance-focused models. KTM is now adjusting its plans to avoid higher taxes. As a result, the current 399cc version is unlikely to be offered locally.

KTM is working on a new sub-350cc engine

KTM is preparing a new engine which will sit below the 350cc limit. This motor will be developed from the existing 399cc single cylinder unit. Hence, the output is expected to be closer to 40 bhp. Performance figures should remain strong for its category. Additionally, the test bike spotted in India may already be running on this updated engine.

Existing models will get the new engine first

The brand plans to introduce the new 350cc engine in the existing models first. This motor will be available before the launch of any new models in the Duke, Adventure and Enduro ranges. Hence, the SMC R may arrive later when the revised engine lineup is ready. Till then, KTM may continue to sell the bike only in overseas markets.

Limited interest may be seen in supermoto segment

If launched, the KTM SMC R could become India’s first dedicated supermoto motorcycle. This may help in introducing the riding format at the local level. However, awareness about supermoto riding is low among Indian buyers. Therefore, sales numbers are expected to remain low. The European and North American markets currently understand this segment better.

KTM is also planning a new 500cc engine

Along with reducing the size of the engine, ktm It is also developing a new 500cc parallel-twin engine. This motor will sit at the top of the single cylinder range. Moreover, it will help it compete with brands like KTM Aprilia And BMW. Therefore, KTM aims to clearly differentiate its future models based on engine size.
